Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental: River Trekking at Mapawa Adventure Park! [SP]

Rappelling down a 65-foot waterfall at Mapawa Adventure Park!

Just when I thought my Mindanao adventure was winding down to an end after after a night’s partying in Cagayan de Oro, a friend invited me to her family’s 2,500 hectare Mapawa Adventure Park for some awesome river trekking.

Assisted by two friendly and knowledgeable guides, we took a horseback ride to the jump-off point of the river trek, where an enormous century-old dao tree stood. My horse was extremely easy to handle; and the guide let me ride on my own through the trail.  From there we headed to the stream strewn with boulders. We trudged through the river, before facing our first challenges: surmounting two waterfalls by sliding down them.

Further on, we mustered enough courage to jump a 25-ft cliff to a swimming hole below. Then, for the finale, we rappelled down the 65-foot Treasure Falls! The initial descent was nerve-wracking; but once you got used to the technicalities and rhythm of handling the rappel, it was an exhilarating and refreshing experience, as we slid down through cascading water onto an awaiting floater below which carried us to the riverbank.

My friend and I accomplished the river trek adventure in less than two hours, right just before I caught a flight back home to Cebu! Hands down, this last-minute invite turned out to be the piece de resistance of my seven-day backpacking trip around Mindanao’s heartland. I highly recommend the park for those seeking the thrill of the outdoors – definitely another reason to visit Cagayan de Oro!
