Who says going on a cruise ship is boring? I recently joined a three-night cruise aboard the Superstar Gemini by Star Cruises, traveling from Singapore to Penang and Langkawi islands and back. I looked forward to the trip because it was my first time on a cruise ship, but wasn’t expecting to have as much fun as we had in the company of my blogger friends!
Here are the most fun things we did during our trip on the Superstar Gemini:
Have your daily #OOTD fix on topsider
Nothing says “I made it big time” like having your #selfie and #OOTD snaps on a cruise ship. Our team spent a lot of time hanging out on the top deck, which I think is the most Insta-worthy section of the cruise liner with its white-painted deck, al fresco restaurants and swimming pools.
Restaurant-hop ’til you drop
Foodies, beware. You’re in for a feast across the 10 restaurants onboard the Superstar Gemini from breakfast buffets to formal dinners. My favorites were Oceana Barbecue, an alfresco restaurant on topsider and Dynasty Restaurant, which specializes on Chinese buffets and is located on the ship’s stern overlooking an outdoor pool.
Pretend to be captain of the ship
Avail of the bridge tour for a sneak peak of the cruise ship’s command center, where the captain himself gave us a personal tour. He even let us sit on one of the chairs and lent us a captain’s hat and a pair of binoculars for a souvenir photo! If you’re into food, guests may take a galley tour where they prepare all the food for the restaurants of the ship.
Watch your favorite singer perform live
If you’re lucky, your favorite artist might be performing onboard during exclusive events. During our first night on the cruise, popular Filipino singer and “Asia’s Queen of R&B” Kyla wooed everyone with her soulful voice and charming personality aboard the SuperstarGemini — her first performance ever on a cruiseship!
Marvel at magic, acrobatic and burlesque shows
Every night, there’s something in store for all ages, such as a magic show by Guiness World Record-holder illusionist Richard Burr and wife Josette, as well as variety shows with elaborate costumes and incredible stunts by acrobat performers. For something more risqué, there’s the topless Marionettes show that’s sure to turn up the heat for adults.
Have an exciting shore excursion
Don’t spend your entire time on the ship! Head out on a shore excursion of your destinations. At the UNESCO World Heritage city of Georgetown on Penang Island, we got to explore drop by the Chew Jetty and Khoo Khongsi clan house then enjoy a trishaw ride around the busy streets. Known for its geoparks, Langkawi, on the other hand, was a nature trip where we toured a limestone cave on foot, visited a fish farm and hopped on a speedboat for a thrilling ride through the mangrove-fringed karst landscape of Kilim Geoforest Park.
Perform as your favorite superstar
After getting inspired by the evening shows and getting some practice at the karaoke lounge, it’s time to get your groove on and dress up like your favorite superstar. Gael of The Pinay Solo Backpacker, Carla of Blissful Guro and I were dared by our group to sign up for Copy Cat, a contest show where guests are invited by the crew to dress up as a celebrity and lip sync a performance onstage in front of a live audience!
Join the pool party!
The topsider pool became the most happening spot as early as 10 AM during the pool party, when dance music blared from the speakers as guests were hosed down by the crew. It’s the perfect way to beat the midday heat with family and friends with a beer can in hand.
The Superstar Gemini by Star Cruises sails weekly between Singapore and Malaysia, with rates starting at USD 943 for an inside cabin for two persons. Find promotional rates, and book your cruise at starcruises.com!
