They say health is wealth. So turn your next vacation in Cebu into an investment for your total wellbeing with a wholesome holiday for your fitness and beauty at the metro’s newest total wellness destination! Its name taken from the Cebuano word for “good” or “well”, Maayo Hotel promises to be more than just a four-star hotel but a total wellness destination with its adjacent out-patient facility called Maayo Well (formerly Maayo Medical) – designed especially for medical tourism at competitive rates. This wellness center is conveniently located in Mandaue City, 5 km from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, and be reached by the MyBus airport shuttle in 15 minutes.
Amenities
The spacious rooms of Maayo Hotel have a warm and cozy atmosphere, cultivated by the earth tones and accents crafted from natural materials like banig (woven pandan), t’nalak (indigenous abaca textile of the T’boli tribe in Mindanao) and solihiya (woven rattan traditionally used in Filipino furniture). This nature-inspired design extends to the 7th floor lobby, graced by a two-storey tall tree sculpture fashioned from driftwood. My favorite part of the hotel is the rooftop, which features a casual dining restaurant and lap pool, overlooking Metro Cebu. Aside from the gym, there’s also an outdoor jogging track for those who wish to stay in shape during their visit.

Maayo Well, the state-of-the-art out-patient facility attached to the hotel, offers a wide range of services, each offered at a specialized unit. Among the professional services offered are Dialysis, Diabetes Care, Cardiovascular, Respiratory Health, ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) and Women’s Wellness. Each specialty unit is designed with the customer’s needs, comfort, privacy and efficiency in mind.
Don’t be intimidated by the aforementioned services as their friendly, attentive and knowledgeable staff also cater to those simply looking out to assess their health, undergo fitness tests, or simply pamper themselves with cosmetic treatments. The Laboratory Services offers private and professional lab testing with specially designed cubicles for specimen collection, while Imaging Services features advanced equipment for medical imaging like CT scanning and the largest MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machine in Cebu!
At the Physical Wellness & Rehabilitation unit, I underwent expert physical therapy that assessed my balance and posture, and prescribed exercises I can do at home to address them. A “water fitness” session had me exercising in an indoor pool specially designed for physical therapy. I also underwent a Cardio Pulmonary Exercise Test (CPET) – the first of its kind in Cebu – at Respiratory Health. Often availed by endurance athletes, CPET is a simultaneous measurement of the cardiovascular and respiratory system during exercise to assess a patient’s exercise capacity.

At Dental Services, I had my annual prophylaxis or dental cleaning with fluoride treatment. An enlightening consultation with Nutrition Services prescribed the ideal diet for my age and body weight. There’s even an Aesthetics Institute for dermatological treatments – where I had a relaxing facial treatment – and cosmetic procedures like rhinoplasty and breast augmentation.
A one-stop shop for executive check-ups, the Executive Suites are designed especially for customers who require a complete assessment of their health, often a requirement for companies. Their Basic Executive Package (PHP 8,500) includes all the laboratory tests with optional add-ons for eye care, ENT, dental care and diabetes care. Big discounts on room rates at Maayo Hotel are also offered to those availing this package.
Meals
Rooms come with breakfast buffet served at Uma, the hotel restaurant located behind the reception area. Taking its name from the Cebuano word for “farm” or “field”, the restaurant offers both Filipino and Western food.
There were some Filipino selections like pork tocino (cured pork) and beef tapa (cured beef), as well as native rice cakes like puto maya, kutsinta and biko, although I was missing out on Cebuano delicacies – like chorizo (pork sausages) and danggit (dried rabbitfish) – often served for breakfast at other hotels. I was delighted, however, by the taho (soybean curds) carted around by the waitress from table to table.
Uma also has an a la carte menu for lunch, which has a good mix of Cebuano, Southeast Asian and Western dishes. I liked my Crusted Salmon with Kaffir Lime Sauce (PHP 390), even though the sauce didn’t seem to have any trace of kaffir lime. For drinks, I had a most refreshing Bodha powershake (PHP 220), an unlikely combination of mango and basil that really made my day!
Upon inquiring, I was informed that signature dishes include Cebuano-style pochero (beef marrow soup), Nasi Goreng, Kung Pao Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Hainanese Chicken Rice and Chik Kut Teh — a chicken version of bak kut teh (pork rib soup).
Dinner is best enjoyed at Ani, the rooftop restaurant which takes its name for the local word for “harvest”. Here, I had Lobster Thermidor, paired with a glass of white wine. Both restaurants were good, although my biggest suggestion to keep in line with the hotel’s wellness brand would be to enhance their menus by including health information like calories and allergens of each dish and to highlight dishes catering to those who require specific diets (eg. sugar-free, low sodium, vegetarian, etc).
